How to Choose a Valid Website for Research

Navigate to a website you want to evaluate, using your Web browser. The appearance of the site can tell you a lot. A professional-looking site is more likely to be of worth than a sloppy, amateur one. However, this is not a hard-and-fast rule. Sometimes organizations with tiny budgets, or individuals working in their spare time, can publish valid information on a homely site, and organizations with the budget to hire pricey Web developers can publish whatever promotes their questionable agendas, and make it look slick and sophisticated.

Check to see if the website has been updated recently. Not all sites will list this information. Dates can be a sign of validity.

If you do not see the author listed at the top as in a title, scroll down to the bottom. If the site is by an organization, it is more likely to be valid than one created by an individual. If the individual is affiliated with an organization, it may be written there. Look for a tab or link to an "About" page or a "Staff" page that may tell more about the authorship. Use the information you find to determine the validity of the site.

Check to see if the site lists other websites where you can confirm its contents.

Do a search of this website on other websites. Find out what they say about it. Look at discussions in forums and comment threads under articles on sites with related topics.

Check to see if this site has been professionally reviewed by conducting other searches on search engines.

Draw your conclusions about the site as if you were interviewing someone for a job. Would you trust this person's resume? Should you trust the website?
